What we do

Digital radiography

James Fisher Nuclear (JFN) offers digital radiography inspection on a wide variety of components and welded assemblies. The manipulator and x-ray set are fully programmable, allowing a series of shots in a technique to be run automatically from a single placement of the inspection piece on the turntable.

Each item to be inspected can therefore have its own specific routines with all of the data normally stored on a technique sheet stored as a programme file ready to be called up as required.

The advantages of this approach are that the programme can be run reproducibly each time it is required for that component. Once the images have been captured they are viewed on a high resolution monitor. Viewing is assisted by a number of digital manipulation tools including defect enhancement algorithms and electronic mark-ups of defects identified.

The manipulator does not corrupt the raw data and is carried out when required using reproducible algorithms. The image can always be viewed without the electronic mark-ups.

For customers requiring pinpoint location of defect, a LASER marking system can be used to identify the defect location at the surface. We can then provide an accurate calculation of the defect depth. Once the images have been viewed, reporting can either be in paper or electronic form.

Electronic reporting has the benefit of low cost and rapidity. In addition the archiving and storage of films can be a significant issues for customers with a requirement to retain records for the life of the component, whilst advances in digital storage media has reduced the cost, volume and the retrieval time of the archive.
