Mechanical and Remote Handling

The Nuclear Industry is challenging for original equipment suppliers with compound environmental factors including radiation, humidity, corrosive atmospheres and potential ATEX requirements.

The legislative constraints can often appear onerous with CDM and EC legislation enforced through formal compliance. The client is knowledgeable and extremely conscious of safety. Third party Certified Body involvement in respect of Pressure Equipment Directives (PED), Electromagnetic Compliance (EMC) and Lifting (LOLER) is considered normal as is BS EN 61508 compliance, Safety Case Integration (HAZID, HAZOP, HAZAN) and Peer Review of designs and documentation. Quality grades stipulate requirements for NDT (and DT) in addition to LTQR requirements, material traceability and weld compliance.

JFN is well versed in the provision of equipment to such exacting standards.

Remote Handling Systems

JFN has a standard range of manipulator products to meet a variety of common requirements within the Nuclear and Process industries. The ModuMan family includes: ModuMan Link; ModuMan Inspector; ModuMan Cave; and ModuMan 100.

Bespoke Solutions

JFN has a high quality design and manufacturing capability with experience of delivering bespoke manipulation and handling systems to service specific customer requirements for operations in hazardous environments.

Examples of such solutions are included below:

Articulated maintenance arm for JET, Culham
An articulated arm designed to carry out maintenance tasks at the Joint European Torus (JET) Culham. The arm can remove and replace the tiles lining the torus interior.

De-fuelling Verification Machine
A diverse system to confirm that the removal of all reactor fuel elements has been successfully completed in line with regulatory requirements.

Re-heater Tube Welding Manipulator
Failed steam tubes in the boilers are required to be mechanically isolated. The machine identifies the location of the failure, prepares the repair area and undertakes the repair by the insertion and welding of a pre-manufactured plug.

Modular Waste Processing Facility
JFN designed equipment to enable the remote processing and packaging of drummed hazardous materials which are incorporated into a suite of modular enclosures to deliver a turnkey, self-contained processing facility.

Reactor Cartridge Removal System
A manually powered system to enable the location, retrieval, transfer and packaging of high dose rate cobalt cartridges from a graphite reactor core.

Reactor Endoscope Deployment System
During extended operations the condition of reactor gamble joints has given cause for concern. This mechanism enables the deployment of a high resolution camera system from the pile cap to undertake visual inspections of the gamble joints in order to gain confidence as to the integrity of the joints.

Disc Saw
A 1.0m diameter, "intelligent" disc saw to enable the size reduction of redundant crucibles.

Additionally JFN will recondition and refurbish legacy systems or manufacture and commission third party equipment to verified quality levels.
