Building Infrastructure and Services
The Building Infrastructure and Sevices team focuses on designing and supporting the implementation of building services and nuclear infrastructure projects. The team has a strong track record in delivering all aspects of engineering design. In addition the team has the project management capability to support and manage the concept through to manufacture, installation and commissioning backed up by the extensive skills and supply chain resources of the wider JFN group. With a deep knowledge of the facilities and operations of the Sellafield plant, built up over 25 years of operating safely on the site, the BIS team has the experience to deliver projects to nuclear industry requirements cost-effectively.
The BIS team has experience throughout the design and delivery lifecycle of a project in mechanical, CE&I, HVAC, civil and structural engineering disciplines. Project tasks undertaken include:
- Optioneering Studies
- Concept Designs
- Scheme Designs
- Detailed Designs
- 3D modelling
- Assembly and sub-assembly drawings and parts lists
- Functional and Technical Specifications
- System Configuration Management
- Design Justification reports
- All aspects of the Safety Lifecycle Design Process including Hazops, Hazans, Design Risk Assessments, Machine Risk Assessments
- Data Sheets
- Supporting Calculations including FEA and load calculations
- Installation Philosophy Documents
- Operating Philosphy Documents

- Critical Spares Lists
- Design and Maintenance FMEA reports
- On-site tasks and site investigations
- Operating and Operator instructions
- Maintenance Instructions
- All aspects of commissioning including Commissioning Strategies, Commissioning Schedules, FAT test, Inactive Commissioning Worksheets, Safety Commissioning Worksheets and the use of one of the three off site JFN facilities for commissioning tests and proving trials
The BIS team has experience in a broad cross-section of building services design disciplines which include:
- Low Voltage and High Voltage power distribution
- Lighting, data and telecoms systems
- Fire alarms, CCTV and other security systems
- Pipework design for: Process, Water, Steam, Compressed Air, Hydraulics
- Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems
- HVAC including nuclear ventilation systems and glove box design
- Cranes and other lifting equipment
- Mechanical handling equipment
- Process instrumentation systems
- Control system design
If required, safety systems can be designed in line with IEC 61508 and/or EG90.
As well as tackling new build projects, BIS has an extensive experience in refurbishment and upgrading existing facilities. The project might have arisen from a periodic safety review, an obsolescence review or a change of use of a facility.
